Here's why NIJ students prefer extracurricular activities to academic activities

Barely seven months ago, I was having a conversation with a new student of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism admitted into ND1. In the course of my conversation with her, she said that organising of events outside academics in the school gives students room to comprehend lectures better. Then she made use of a popular cliché, "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."

Ordinarily, I am not a firm believer of that generally accepted cliche because from experience, I have come to realise that the moment Jack overplays, he forgets the essence of even attending lectures and paying the sacrifice of being in school.

According to research, students who partipate more in academic activities enhance and develop essential skills required for a successful life.

Students in NIJ at all levels, get to develop important life skills such as leadership, time management, effective communication, logical thinking, problem-solving by joining clubs, seminar, and program specifically focused and designed to help them in the academic sense.

"Ever since I joined NIJ late last year, NIJ took me on a journey of equiping me with writing skill needed of me to become a journalist.

"Again, I believe extracurricular activities in school is a much more profitable exercise because it helps to provide support and stability for the body system. It also encourages mental development, effective networking and great nurturing of talent and potential. Besides, it is really fun." An ND1 student, Daniel Okeke emphasised.

"The moment i got into NIJ as a fresher, NIJ imbued in me writing skills. I didn't know how to write articles, news until I got to NIJ. But now that I've acquired it, I've even had some job opportunities.

"In addition, In terms of entertainment and other areas of extracurricular activities, it's very essential because first, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

"Secondly, we live in a social world. Extracurricular activities help students connect with one another, know each other better and build valuable connections.

"If you have all the skills in the world but no one is aware then it's almost useless. So other extracurricular activities apart from educational stuffs, is also very profitable to students." ND1 student, Wisdom Chinweuba corroborated.

In conclusion, extracurricular activities has been generally accepted by students of the great institute, Nigerian Institute of Journalism, as a profitable excercise for encouraging mental development and networking which helps students connect with one another and build valuable connections with people.
